Tanya Ryk Friedman '94 for Harvard.jpg

For over twenty years in private practice, I have provided consultations, evaluations, and ongoing psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, and children, as well as families and couples.

After graduating from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, cum laude, with a concentration in Psychology, I went on to receive my Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology from New York University. I completed extensive training in Psychodynamic and Cognitive-Behavioral models of therapy at New York University. I did additional Cognitive-Behavioral work at the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy.  Prior to private practice, I trained and worked at Bellevue Hospital Center for seven years. I was the Staff Psychologist at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic at Bellevue Hospital Center, and the Clinical Director of a specialized therapeutic public school program for emotionally challenged children housed at Bellevue.

During my clinical internship at the New York University-Bellevue Clinical Psychology Internship program, I worked with adults, children of all ages, groups, and families on a wide variety of presenting issues.  Having worked in inpatient, outpatient, emergency room, and forensic settings, I have training in psycho-educational and emotional functioning evaluations, neuropsychological assessments, empirically validated short-term therapy, and longer term care.  I also have specialized training in helping psychological challenges associated with traumatic experiences and medical problems.

At Bellevue Hospital Center, I was appointed the Associate Director of the Psychology Externship Program supervising and helping to oversee the clinical training of graduate students.  I also taught as an adjunct instructor in Psychology at New York University's School for Continuing and Professional Studies and was also a teaching assistant for various undergraduate psychology courses at New York University's College of Arts and Sciences.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, I became licensed in Maryland in order to provide a continuity of care to my patients. More recently, I also acquired licensure in Connecticut. I am a member of the American Psychological Association, the New York State Psychological Association, the Maryland Psychological Association, and other professional organizations.

Outside of my practice, I enjoy spending time with my family and engaging in volunteer work that is aimed at helping others, especially young minds in their personal growth and pathways towards success. To that end, I have served on several non-profit boards that focus on education, building communities, and helping others.  I was a trustee and officer of the board of trustees at the Chapin School for eleven years and the president of the Chapin School's alumnae association for four years. In these capacities, I worked on or led several initiatives and committees that focused on character, ethics and emotional well-being of students, enhancing diversity efforts, admissions policies, and strengthening a sense of community among alumnae. I was also a board member and the nominating chair of the Resolution Project which seeks to identify and to inspire youth leaders to engage in socially responsible projects worldwide through seed funding and mentorship. In addition, I served on the board of managers at the Harvard Club of New York City for nine years and was also a vice-president for a two-year term. As the president of the Harvard Club of New York Foundation for four years and previously as a director for another three years, I raised scholarship funds and provided ongoing mentoring for Harvard students from New York City.  Lastly, I have served on the Harvard Alumni Association's Board of Directors and was honored to receive the Hiram S. Hunn Memorial Award in 2015 for longtime volunteerism to the Schools and Scholarships Committee.
